Mount Elgon National Park, straddling the Uganda–Kenya border, preserves one of East Africa’s oldest and gentlest giants—an extinct shield volcano standing at 4,321 m (Wagagai Peak) with the world’s largest intact volcanic base.

Spanning roughly 1,120 km² in Uganda, the park transitions through lush montane forests, bamboo zones, tree heaths, and Afro‑alpine moorlands—home to giant lobelias, groundsels, and endemic flora.

Wildlife includes forest elephants, buffalo, bushbucks, duikers, and primates such as blue and colobus monkeys. The park also hosts over 300 bird species, featuring rarities like the endangered lammergeier, Jackson’s francolin, and Tacazze sunbird.

Trekking is a highlight—climbing routes like Sasa, Piswa, and Sipi Trails lead to Wagagai Peak, a vast caldera, caves (Kitum and others), waterfalls, and hot springs.

Designated a UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve and vital water catchment for millions, Mount Elgon offers a serene, biodiversity-rich, and culturally immersive trekking experience off the beaten path.
