Lake Mburo National Park is Uganda’s smallest savannah reserve—just 260–370 km²—yet it’s packed with diverse habitats: lakes, wetlands, acacia woodlands, and rocky gorges. It’s one of the few parks in Uganda where you’ll find impala and Burchell’s zebra roaming freely alongside eland, topi, waterbuck, and abundant hippos and crocodiles.

A birdwatcher’s paradise with over 300 recorded species, including papyrus specialists, African finfoot, and the occasional shoebillWildlife encounters include zebras, buffalo, leopards, hyenas, bush hyrax and three species of otters.

What truly sets Mburo apart is the presence of traditional Ankole long‑horned cattle. These majestic animals, revered by the Bahima pastoralists, still graze freely alongside wildlife—a testament to harmonious conservation shaped by Ankole values. The cattle’s grazing practices help maintain the savannah, showcasing a centuries‑old cultural landscape known as “Karo Kurungi” or “beautiful land”

Visitors enjoy a range of activities: guided game drives (day and night), boat safaris on Lake Mburo, walking trails to salt licks and scenic overlooks.

Community conservation is at the heart of the park—20% of entrance fees fund local schools, clinics, and infrastructure, making Lake Mburo both a conservation success and a cultural gateway.
